The main character in this book is Darby Shaw, a young law student. One day a Supreme Court justice was murdered in his home while sleeping. Darby wrote a brief telling her theory of how the justice was murdered. Darby's professor took the brief to Washington and gave it to Gavin Verheek who read it and passed it on. Soon it had reached the president and someone outside of Washington also got a hold of it.
             One day Darby's professor was driving away in his car and it exploded, killing the professor. Someone had read the brief outside of the FBI and the bomb was intended to kill Darby. Whoever killed Darby's professor also killed the justice and now they were after Darby. Gavin was also killed for knowing too much about what was written in the brief and for trying to help Darby. Darby met Gray, a news reporter, and he was the only person she could trust and talk to. The president and the FBI were ignoring the brief and Darby was sure that Washington was trying to cover up something. It was up to her and Gray to find out the cover-up.
