The main character in this book is Nicholas Easter, one of the twelve jurors who were about to hear a tobacco case. The jury was not allowed to talk to anyone about the trial but one day Rankin Fitch, defending the tobacco company, got a call. The woman's name was Marlee and she would tell Fitch exactly what the jury would be doing the following day. Marlee knew everything that was going on. She knew what the jurors would be doing and she knew what Fitch was doing. Nicholas went to the judge and told him that the jurors felt as if they were being watched and followed. One juror was excused and the rest of them had to spend two weeks by themselves with no contact to the outside world.
             Marlee told Fitch that she was about to have another juror excused from the trial and that was excatly what happened. Marlee finally had Fitch's attention and she seemed in control. One day Marlee and Fitch met and she offered him a deal. She said she can make the jury deliver a verdict that he wants if he agrees to pay her ten million dollars. How can Marlee make the jury deliver a verdict that Fitch wants and most importantly, why is she doing this?
